Name: Stu Hay Age: Feeling Good Years in the Game: 20 years Favourite Beer: Sunner Kolsch Lager from Cologne in Germany. Such a crisp, flavoursome and clean beer and the right size too. 500ml Favourite Wine Region: Colares, Portugal Most Awesome Wine Experience: 1991 Wynns Michael Shiraz at a wine dinner with a bunch of industry chums when I was just discovering wine. It spun my head around. A real layercake of a wine. Like a drug I just keep chasing similar experiences. They get harder to find but the pleasure doesn’t diminish Wine wankerism: I just can’t help talking about what I am tasting, even around people who could not give a toss. Guilty Wine Pleasure: Cellaring wines. I drink them too late too often, but hell when they look good after 10 years then you can forgive the ones that were shot after 5. Variety I’m Most Similar to: Grenache - not hip, a little crusty. Subtle, smooth but can get spicy. Loves a day in the sun. Name: Dave Cann Age: Younger than Stu Years in the Game: 13 years Favourite Beer: Coopers Sparkling Ale (Ah...just like mother’s milk!) Favourite Wine Region: Chablis, France Most Awesome Wine Experience: A perfectly cellared bottle of 1954 Seppelt K7 Hermitage (Shiraz) from the Grampians. More muscular than a leotard clad Madonna, this wine put others half its age to shame. Intense juicy plums, cracked pepper, and hints of chocolate...you would have sworn it was still a teenager. Looked like a fifteen year old – kind of felt a little dirty indulging in it. Biggest Toff Moment: Proposing to my now wife in front of Paul Jaboulet’s La Chapelle in the Rhone Valley. Also goes down as my stupidest decision as it now costs me a bottle of La Chapelle Hermitage each year in September. Guilty Wine Pleasure: Dessert wines. Anyone who doesn’t admit they like a little sugar on the side is a liar. Variety I’m Most Similar to: Viognier – could be interesting and flashy, but really just a bit fruity and hard to take seriously. Variety Stu Thinks I’m Most Similar to: Sauvignon Blanc- Bold, Brassy and thrives on popularity. Loved by the ladies and tolerated by the blokes. Occasionally smells of cats pee. |
