Wine Lessons > Lagrein - the Italian for AussiesLagrein - the Italian for AussiesPronounced lah-GRAYN
Lagrein is native to the valleys of Northern Italy in the Trentino-Alto Adige region north of Bolzano near the border with Austria. A relative of the Shiraz grape, it is used in red wine and rosé. The rosés are considered to be some of Italy's best; the reds can vary between light fruity table wines to luscious purple wines with wonderful chocolaty nuances and rich fruit flavours of cherries and plums. Small amounts of Lagrein are planted in Australia most prominently in the Macedon Ranges, Barossa Valley, Murray Darling and Langhorne Creek with some currently being trialled in Tasmania |
